GCC to start work on flyover close to Phoenix Mall in January

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will begin work on the development of a 3-km-long flyover, connecting Five Furlong Road and Guru Nanak College in Velachery, in January.

“As the street is vast, now we have determined to extend the width of the proposed flyover. Soil investigation for the ₹310-crore flyover is more likely to start by the top of this month. The three-lane construction, which is able to ease visitors congestion within the space, is anticipated to be accomplished in two years,” a GCC official mentioned.

The soil investigation will start as soon as the contractor is finalised. The GCC has already carried out a visitors examine for establishing the flyover on the Sardar Patel Road-Velachery Main Road junction.

The Velachery Bypass junction(Phoenix Mall junction) and Five Furlong Road junction have been witnessing heavy visitors,officers mentioned.

As per the visitors survey, Five Furlong Road junction recorded peak hour visitors quantity at 7,459 passenger automobile models/hr, and Guru Nanak College junction at 7,742 pcu/hr. Traffic between Velachery Bypass and Sardar Patel Road is 57%, and between Velachery Bypass and Five Furlong Road is 26%.

The 11-m-wide undividedflyover will stretch from a degree 300 metres away from the Sardar Patel Road-Velachery Main Road junction to the Velachery Bypass, protecting Racecourse Road junction, Five Furlong Road junction and Velachery Bypass junction.

Uni-directional down ramps have been proposed on Five Furlong Road and close to Guru Nanak College. Additionally, a 5.5-m-wide service street and 1.5-m-wide footpath have been proposed on each side of the flyover. Around 191 sq.m. of personal land and 461 sq.m. of presidency land is required for this undertaking, the officers mentioned.

Subha Murali, a resident of Velachery, mentioned: “This flyover just isn’t going to ease visitors congestion. It is pointless as mall-goers will begin utilizing the underbridge space for parking, which is able to solely result in extra congestion. Just take away the encroachments and widen the street.”
