Gomathi plays the titular role of Shankar, a menacing serial killer in the film. He confesses to committing multiple murders and declines to take a lawyer to fight his case. There are glimpses of a troubled past and upbringing that turned him into a psychopathic murderer. The trailer features some violent scenes where he is murdering his victims, as there are demands for justice made by the public. However, before jumping to conclusions, a cop, Michael and a psychiatrist (Smruthi) team up to investigate the details of the case.
According to makers, “Stephen is a tense, character-driven thriller exploring guilt, morality, and the blurred lines between right and wrong.”
Speaking about the film, Gomathi said in a statement, “Stepping into his world was exciting, challenging, and satisfying. Co-writing the film made it a tad bit easier to adapt. I owe a lot to my director, Mithun for trusting me with such a complex role and guiding me through it and Netflix for offering a global stage for us to showcase our talent.”
Mithun added, “Telling this story felt both personal and risky, and that’s what made it exciting. Gomathi brought such an honest energy to the role, which really helped shape the world we were trying to build.”
Stephen is produced by Jayakumar and Mohan under their banner under the JM Production House.
