MUBI has released the first trailer for Sound of Falling, giving audiences an early look at Mascha Schilinski’s acclaimed multi-generational drama, which unfolds across a single farmstead in northern Germany, ahead of its U.S. theatrical debut in January

Structured around four young women who grow up on the same property in four different eras — Alma in the 1910s, Erika in the 1940s, Angelika in the 1980s and Lenka in the 2020s — the film traces how the home changes around them while their experiences begin to echo one another. The script is co-written by Schilinski and Louise Peter.

Sound of Falling arrives with a notable international footprint. It premiered in competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, sharing the Jury Prize with Oliver Laxe’s Sirat, and later collected the Silver Frog at Camerimage for its cinematography. Schilinski won Best Director at the 2025 Chicago International Film Festival, where the film also received the sound award. It continued its run through Toronto and picked up nominations at the Gotham Awards, the British Independent Film Awards and across several categories at the European Film Awards — including film, director, screenplay, cinematography, casting and score.

The ensemble cast includes Lena Urzendowsky, Hanna Heckt, Susanne Wuest, Luise Heyer, Laeni Geiseler, Lea Drinda and a large supporting roster. The film is produced by Studio Zentral with additional backing from ZDF/Das Kleine Fernsehspiel and German federal and regional funding bodies.

MUBI will release the film in North America, the UK, Ireland, India and Turkey, with a U.S. theatrical rollout beginning January 16.

For Germany, Sound of Falling enters an Oscar race the country has historically navigated well, following recent wins for All Quiet on the Western Front and earlier awards for The Lives of Others, Nowhere in Africa and The Tin Drum.
