A day after Kerala Congress chairman P.J. Joseph ridiculed the KC(M) as a party that has lost its relevance, KC(M) chairman Jose K. Mani on Tuesday (December 16) launched a rare public rebuke of his archrival. “There is no need for anyone to rush in to draw conclusions. In Thodupuzha, where there has been much chest thumping, the Joseph faction has won only two seats out of 32 wards. Their position is like a sparrow perched on the back of a hawk,” he said.
According to him, the KC(M) has secured the votes it was organisationally entitled to and the results, including in Pala, cannot be described as a setback in central Kerala. Mr Mani also reiterated that there was no political situation at present that warranted leaving the Left Democratic Front (LDF).
Responding to a remark by Kerala Congress executive chairman Mons Joseph, MLA, who asked the UDF not to “water the two leaves,” a reference to the election symbol of the KC(M), and to exercise restraint when that party “remains in tatters,” Mr. Mani said there was no need for watering as drip irrigation facilities were now in place.
In the Pala municipality, the KC(M) had 10 councillors in the previous council and has retained the same number this time as well and in the Pala Assembly constituency, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) still recorded a lead of 2,198 votes, he pointed out
Mr. Mani’s remarks assume significance amid an intense war of words, both online and on the ground, over the performance of the two Kerala Congress factions in Central Travancore, particularly in Kottayam and Idukki districts. The Joseph faction is clearly miffed by the Congress sending feelers to the KC(M) following the declaration of results in the local body polls.
Meanwhile, discussions within the UDF on front expansion still remain active. The UDF has convened a meeting on December 22 to deliberate on expanding the alliance.
