According to the police, the incident was a fallout of a skirmish that broke out when the residents questioned the gang for consuming alcohol and smoking ganja on a vacant plot near the house and creating nuisance.
Police sources said the complainant heard a loud explosion from the rear side of their house.
Manivannan and Manimaran, both ambulance drivers resided on Venugopal Street in Mogappair. At around 1 a.m., something like a loud explosion was heard from the rear of their house.
Alarmed, they rushed out of the bedroom to find the rear roof of the house and window panes shattered. The wall had developed cracks due to the blast.
Upon receiving information, the police rushed to the scene, along with bomb disposal experts and a sniffer dog, and conducted an inspection.
Police sources said Manivannan’s uncle had been rearing cattle on a vacant plot near the house where the bomb was thrown. The vacant plot was used by some to smoke and consume alcohol, and residents had lodged complaints about this. The attack was likely carried out by someone angered by these complaints, the police said.
Based on a complaint from Manivannan, the police registered a case and apprehended the two persons — Martin, 21, and a juvenile. Further investigation was launched to nab three more suspects who were allegedly involved in the attack.
