The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Council meeting on Friday was the first of its kind for two newly nominated members — B. Balaji and P. Jancy Uma, both persons with disabilities. They thanked the State government and the Chennai Corporation for the nomination in their speeches at the meeting.

The Council passed several resolutions related to solid waste management at the meeting, including a revision of wages for sanitation workers, fixing the daily salary at ₹753 per worker.

The GCC will take up bulk waste management across all zones, to ensure regular collection from bulk waste generators such as apartments, hotels, hospitals, and commercial buildings.

A total of ₹6.47 crore has been allocated for a project to manage domestic hazardous waste through authorised private agencies. Approval was also granted to deploy 95 Tata Ace vehicles for door-to-door waste collection at a cost of ₹4.05 crore.

Resolutions were passed for legacy waste treatment through biomining at major dump sites. Biomining works at the Athipattu dumping ground were approved at a cost of ₹7.10 crore. The Council also reviewed ongoing biomining work at the Perungudi site and waste-related actions concerning the Pallikaranai old dump yard, along with waste management works under the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board.

Many councillors flagged issues relating to frequent errors in birth certificates, patta and OSR land problems, and stray cattle.
