U.T. government taking efforts to establish IT park in Puducherry: L-G

The Puducherry government was taking efforts to establish an IT park in Puducherry, Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan said here on Saturday.

Addressing an event titled ‘Namma Puducherry, path to inclusive development’, the Lt. Governor said around 25,000 to 30,000 students graduated every year from colleges in the Union Territory. It was not possible to provide them all government jobs or to accommodate them in existing private companies in Puducherry. Graduating students were migrating to neighbouring cities in search of jobs, he said.

“Around 50,000 students from Puducherry are working in IT companies outside the region. The setting up of an IT park will help in providing jobs to students passing out from our colleges. Events like this will help in the development of Puducherry,” he said.

Chief Minister N. Rangasamy in his address said the development of Puducherry Airport was essential for companies to invest in Puducherry. “The Central government is ready to fund the expansion of the airport but for that Tamil Nadu should provide land for extending the runway. If the State government of Tamil Nadu provides us land, we can expand the airport,” the Chief Minister said.

In his address, Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu said that he has plans to invest in the Union Territory. More than 100 people from Puducherry were working in Zoho, he said.

“Puducherry has huge potential because of its good social and economic indicators. The territory also has good talent pool, considering the academic environment in the region,” he said.

Home Minister A. Namassivayam, in his address, said around 185 new firms have established base in Puducherry after the AINRC-BJP government assumed office in 2021. Minister for Public Works K. Lakshminarayanan also addressed the gathering.

The event was organised by Best Puducherry Foundation with Home Minister as adviser. At the event, several personalities who contributed to Puducherry’s development were honoured.
