They have now arrested the driver, while also booking his supervisor as an accused for failing to disclose information about the accident to the police.
What happened?
The accident occurred at around 11.15 p.m. on December 16 near the Velappanchavadi junction on Poonamallee High Road, under the jurisdiction of the Avadi Police Commissionerate.
Nithish Saravan, 23, who worked as a TV serial editor, was returning home – towards the city – after work on his two-wheeler. The container lorry in question, which was being driven at high speed and in a rash and negligent manner, rammed his two-wheeler, killing Nithish on the spot.
The police said that after causing the accident, the container driver did not stop or provide any assistance to the victim. He also failed to inform the police or a hospital, and instead fled the spot and went into hiding.
A case was registered by the Avadi Traffic Investigation Wing, after which CCTV footage from cameras near the accident spot and along the Chennai-bound route was examined. The police then identified the container lorry and arrested the driver, Raja, 53, a native of Mannargudi.
Raja was remanded to Puzhal Central Prison. Further investigation revealed that the container supervisor, Munusamy, had come to know of the incident on the same day but had deliberately concealed information from the police. Hence, the supervisor was also booked as an accused.
