Police said adequate traffic personnel would be deployed at 217 key junctions and intersections across the city to ensure smooth movement and road safety. Special focus areas include markets, malls and high-footfall locations such as Tank Bund, NTR Marg and PVNR Marg along Necklace Road, as well as commercial and nightlife zones in Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Punjagutta, Khairatabad, Saifabad and surrounding areas.
Need-based traffic restrictions
Need-based traffic restrictions will come into force from 11 p.m. onwards on Tank Bund and adjoining roads and will remain in place until the celebrations conclude. Vehicular traffic, including private and public transport, will not be allowed on NTR Marg, PVNR Marg and Tank Bund between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. on the intervening night of December 31 and January 1. Several diversions will also be implemented around Hussain Sagar to regulate traffic flow and prevent congestion.
As an additional measure, all flyovers in the city, except those at Begumpet and Tolichowki, may be closed on a need basis during the same period. The PVNR Expressway flyover will remain open exclusively for passengers travelling to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport with valid air tickets.
Entry of private travel buses, lorries, heavy goods vehicles and heavy passenger vehicles into Hyderabad city limits will be restricted between 10 p.m. on December 31 and 2 a.m. on January 1. Such vehicles, including contract carriages bound for Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and other States, have been advised to use the Outer Ring Road.
Visitors planning to access Tank Bund on foot have been advised to park their vehicles at designated locations, including the Secretariat visitors’ parking, HMDA parking near Prasads Multiplex, GHMC Head Office lane, Race Course road (beside NTR Ghat), Adarsh Nagar lane, NTR Stadium and nearby approved areas. Hotels, clubs, bars and event organisers have been directed to make special parking and security arrangements and to regulate traffic around their premises. They have also been instructed to ensure liquor service is restricted to permitted hours and to provide safe transport options for intoxicated patrons.
Intensive enforcement drives
The traffic police said intensive enforcement drives would be carried out to curb drunk driving, overspeeding, rash and dangerous driving, wrong-side driving and other violations. Stringent action will be taken against offenders, particularly those involved in stunt biking, racing and reckless driving. Motorists were reminded that drunken driving is a punishable offence under the Motor Vehicles Act, attracting a fine of ₹10,000 and/or imprisonment, with stricter penalties for repeat offenders.
Appealing to the public to cooperate, the Hyderabad Traffic Police urged motorists to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and to use public transport or cabs where possible. Commuters have been advised to follow official traffic updates on the Hyderabad Traffic Police social media platforms or contact the traffic helpline in case of emergencies. The police said the measures were being implemented in the interest of public safety and wished citizens a safe and happy New Year.
