Mangaluru police are searching for four persons who assaulted a migrant labourer, hailing from Jharkhand, after presuming him to be a Bangladeshi.

The police gave the name of the victim as Diljan Ansari. For the last 15 years, Ansari has been coming to Mangaluru to work as a labourer for a period of six months.

On January 11 evening, four persons, said to be associated with a right-wing organisation, waylaid him at a place in Kavoor police station limits. Accusing Ansari of being a Bangladeshi, the four persons allegedly abused him and sought his identity documents.

When Ansari insisted that he is an Indian, the group used objects carried by Ansari to assault him on the head. As a local woman rushed to his help, the assailants left the place. The victim, whose head was bleeding heavily, was rushed to a local hospital where he received treatment for his injuries. After treatment, the victim went back to this room.

Local leaders brought the incident to the notice of the police. In a statement, Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said police verified and found that Ansari is an Indian.

Mr. Reddy said the police have identified the assailants as Sagar, Danush, Lalu Rathish and Mohan, all resident of Kuloor. “We will look into their background,” he said.

All the four accused persons are absconding. They were accused of offences punishable under Sections 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 109 (attempt to murder), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), 353 (statements conducive to pubic mischief), 118(1) (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) r/w 3(5) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. “Instructions have been given to arrest them immediately,” Mr. Reddy said.
