Mr. Trump signed the charter of the “Board of Peace,” which he has billed as a body for resolving international conflicts, with other founding members in Davos on Thursday (January 22, 2026). U.S. officials, during the launch, presented their vision for a “New Gaza” that would turn the shattered Palestinian territory into a glitzy resort of skyscrapers by the sea, a project that could start emerging in three years.

The countries which have accepted Trump’s invitation are Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Belarus, Egypt, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Morocco, Pakistan, UAE and Vietnam. A number of countries, including China, Germany, Italy, Paraguay, Russia, Slovenia, Turkiye and Ukraine, have remained non-committal on the invitation.

After meeting U.S. President Donald Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) held in Davos, Mr. Zelenskyy slammed Europe’s response to the U.S.-Greenland dispute. ““Instead of taking the lead in ‌defending freedom ‌worldwide, especially when America’s focus ‍shifts elsewhere, Europe looks lost trying ‍to convince the U.S. President to change,” Mr. Zelenskyy said in a fiery speech.

Zelenskyy said the meetings would take ‌place on ‌Friday (January 23) and Saturday (January 24), speaking ‍after he gave ‍an address at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss Alpine resort Davos. .

President Donald Trump ‍said the details of a U.S. ‌agreement over Greenland were still being worked out on Thursday (January 22, 2026), speaking one day after stepping back from a tariff threat and ruling out the use of force to seize the Danish territory.

EU leaders gather to chart new course for transatlantic ties after Trump threats over Greenland

European Union leaders are gathering for emergency talks on Thursday (January 22, 2026) to chart a new course in transatlantic relations after a tumultuous two weeks dominated by U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed threats to take control of Greenland.

On the eve of their summit, Mr. Trump dramatically backed away from his insistence on “acquiring” Greenland, a semiautonomous territory of Denmark. For the first time, he said that he would not use force to seize the island. Trump also dropped his threat of slapping tariffs on eight European nations supporting Denmark.

Yet nothing suggests that the unpredictable U.S. leader won’t change his mind again. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen this week cast doubts over his reliability after he appeared ready to renege on an EU-U.S. trade deal sealed in July that was meant to end further tariffs.

It was now up to NATO commanders to work through the details of extra security requirements, Mr. Rutte said in an interview at the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, adding that he was sure non-Arctic NATO allies would want to contribute to the effort.

“We will come together in NATO with our senior commanders to work out what is necessary,” an upbeat Mr. Rutte said, adding: “I have no doubt we can do this quite fast. Certainly I would hope for 2026, I hope even early in 2026.”

Canadian PM Carney’s Davos speech earns rare standing ovation

Renewed verbal attacks from U.S. President Donald Trump are prompting Canadians to rally behind Prime Minister Mark Carney, who earned ‍a rare standing ovation in Davos for openly decrying powerful nations using economic integration as weapons and tariffs as leverage. In his speech, Mr. Carney called on nations to accept that a rules-based global order was over and pointed to Canada as an example of how “middle ‌powers” might act together to avoid being victimised by American hegemony.

“When the rules no longer protect you, you must protect yourself,” he said. “Middle powers must act together because if you are not on the table, you are on the menu.”

In response, Mr. Trump retorted that Canada “lives because of the United States,” and told the crowd in Davos that Mr. Carney should be grateful for the United States’ previous largesse, addressing the prime minister directly: “Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”

Greenland talks aim to prevent Russia, China ‘access’: NATO chief

Talks with the U.S. on Greenland will aim to ensure China and Russia do not get military and economic access to the Danish Arctic territory, NATO’s chief said today.

Following talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos, Switzerland, yesterday, U.S. President Donald Trump backed down on threats to seize Greenland by force, saying he had reached a “framework” of a deal on the island that satisfies him.

“It was a very good discussion,” Mr. Rutte said at a Ukrainian event on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in the Swiss mountain resort.

Mr. Rutte said the next talks will build on the results from his meeting with Mr. Trump.

One “work stream” to emerge from his meeting with Trump was how NATO allies – including its seven members in the Arctic – can “collectively make sure that the Arctic stays safe, that the Russians and the Chinese stay out”.

The other issue, he said, was “that we ensure that the Chinese and the Russians will not gain access to the Greenland economy” or militarily.

Mr. Trump’s threats over the vast Arctic territory – an autonomous part of NATO member Denmark – had plunged relations between Europe and its key ally Washington into their deepest crisis in decades.
