According to Election Commission data, the BJP has already secured victory in Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Monteswar, Bhatar, Medinipur and Asansol Dakshin seats. On the other hand, the TMC retained the Bhagawangola seat in Murshidabad district, with its candidate Reyat Hossain Sarkar defeating his nearest candidate by a margin of 56,407.

This year the State saw a turnout of 92.8% in the first phase on April 23, while the second recorded 91.47 % polling on April 29 — the highest in the State since Independence, according to the State’s Chief Electoral Officer.

Mamata reaches Bhabanipur counting centre, Suvendu present
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached the counting centre for the high-profile Bhabanipur Assembly constituency on Monday (May 4, 2026) afternoon, following allegations that a TMC agent had been forced out.Ms. Banerjee reached Sakhawat Memorial Govt Girls’ High School, the designated counting venue at Lord Sinha Road, as her lead against Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari narrowed over the last few rounds.
Mr. Adhikari is already present at the counting centre.
TMC leaders claimed that one of its counting agents had been forced out of the centre, leading to Ms. Banerjee’s arrival at the venue.

As of 3 p.m., the Election Commission has released trends for votes being counted for all the 293 seats. Additionally, only 47.14% votes were counted as of 2:57 p.m., as per the data available.Accordingly, the Bharatiya Janata Party has maintained its lead in 192 seats, while the All India Trinamool Congress has been ahead in 96 seats.
AJUP is leading from two seats, both being led by Humayun Kabir.
Congress, CPI(M) and the AISF are leading on one seat each.

Minister Aroop Biswas trails in Tollyganj
West Bengal minister Aroop Biswas was trailing by a slender margin in the Tollyganj seat in south Kolkata, as counting of votes was underway for the assembly elections on Monday.After five rounds of counting, Biswas was trailing by 624 votes against BJP’s Papia Adhikari, a Bengali filmstar of yesteryears. A total of 16 rounds of counting will be held in the seat.
Mr. Biswas stepped down as the Sports Minister of the State in the wake of the controversy over the “mismanagement” of the Lionel Messi event at the Salt Lake stadium last December.
Alleged mismanagement and security lapses during the high-profile event led angry spectators to go on a rampage at the stadium.
Mr. Biswas, however, remained a Cabinet Minister, retaining charge of the Power Department.

TMC’s four-time MLA Sujit Bose trailing in Bidhannagar
The TMC’s four-time MLA and West Bengal Minister Sujit Bose is trailing the BJP’s Sharadwat Mukherjee by a margin of over 10,000 votes in the Bidhannagar constituency.According to the Election Commission website, Mr. Bose polled 10,247 votes, while Mr. Mukherjee got 20,997 votes after the third round of counting.
Mr. Bose had recently appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the municipal jobs scam case.

Humayun Kabir leads in Nowda, Rejinagar seats in Murshidabad
Aam Janata Unnayan Party chief Humayun Kabir was leading in the Nowda and Rejinagar seats of West Bengal’s Murshidabad district over his nearest rivals as counting of votes progressed.According to the Election Commission website, Mr. Kabir, who was suspended from the TMC over his proposal to build a mosque modelled on Babri Masjid in Murshidabad district, led in the Nowda seat by over 5,000 votes over his nearest rival after the fifth round of counting.
In Rejinagar, he was leading by over 6,000 seats over BJP’s Bapan Ghosh after the third round of counting.
“Grateful to the people of Murshidabad, who replied to the injustice meted out to me and the discrimination against minorities by the Mamata Banerjee government,” he told PTI Videos.

TMC’s Kunal Ghosh extends lead in Beleghata
TMC candidate and the party’s spokesperson Kunal Ghosh was leading over his nearest BJP rival Partha Chaudhury in the Beleghata seat in north Kolkata, according to the Election Commission.After the fourth round of counting, Mr. Ghosh extended his lead by over 14,000 votes.

Former Bengal Minister Jyoti Priya Mallick leads in Habra seat
Former West Bengal minister Jyoti Priya Mallick, an accused in a multi-crore ration distribution scam, was leading by over 4,000 votes over his nearest rival of the BJP in Habra seat in North 24 Parganas district, according to the Election Commission.Mr. Mallick was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in October 2023 in connection with its probe into the money trail in the alleged multi-crore ration distribution scam and spent over 14 months in custody before walking out on bail.
The former Minister, who held the Food and Supplies portfolio in the Mamata Banerjee government from 2011 to 2021, was the State’s forest minister when he was arrested in connection with the case.

No victory rallies to be allowed on Monday after announcement of assembly poll results: Bengal CEO
West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal said no rallies celebrating the victory of candidates will be allowed in the State on Monday (May 4, 2026) as the counting of votes for 293 Assembly seats was under way.He said the counting is going fine and no violence has been reported in the State.
“We have directed all DMs not to allow any victory rallies today. These victory processions will be allowed from tomorrow. We don’t want any post-poll violence and appeal to everyone to stay calm and maintain peace,” the CEO said.
Political parties need to take permission from local police stations to bring out victory rallies, he said.
“There has been no incident of violence. Any poll-related death was reported from anywhere in Bengal,” Mr. Agarwal said.

TMC ministers Sashi Panja, Udayan Guha trailing in Bengal
Initial trends from various parts of West Bengal, according to Election Commission figures, showed several TMC leaders trailing their nearest BJP rivals.In Cooch Behar district’s Dinhata, Minister Udayan Guha was trailing against BJP’s Ajay Ray after four of the 24 rounds of counting.
In Kolkata’s Shyampukur, Minister Sashi Panja was trailing BJP’s Purnima Chakraborty after two rounds of counting, with another 19 rounds left.
The silver lining for the party, however, was at the Kolkata Port seat, where city mayor and minister Firhad Hakim was leading his nearest Congress rival after the first round of counting, with another 18 rounds still to go.

The BJP has managed to maintain its early lead over the ruling TMC.The saffron party is now leading in over 90 seats, as of 10.45 a.m., while the TMC was leading in over 40 seats.
BJP’s lead included seats such as Matigara-Naxalbari, Kaliaganj, Maldaha, and Jadavpur.
The TMC’s lead , meanwhile, included Kolkata Port, Howrah Madhya, Howrah Dakshin, and Coochbehar Dakshin

Tight security across West Bengal
Stringent security arrangements were put in place across West Bengal on Monday (May 4, 2026) as counting of votes for the high-stakes assembly elections will begin at 8 a.m., officials said.More than 2.5 lakh personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), along with state police, have been deployed at 77 counting centres across 23 districts under a multi-layered security grid, they said.

TMC dares BJP to bring full force ahead of fresh poll in Falta
The Trinamool Congress on Sunday (May 3, 2026) challenged the BJP to use its full machinery to win the Falta Assembly seat, where fresh voting will be held on May 21 after the Election Commission of India (ECI) countermanded the polls in the constituency, citing “severe electoral offences”.In a post on X, the Mamata Banerjee-led party asked the BJP to bring Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Falta, and urged the ECI to deploy 50,000 central force personnel, claiming that such measures would not have any effect on the electorate.
The fresh poll was ordered due to “severe electoral offences and subversion of the democratic process” on April 29, when voting in Falta was held in the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections.

West Bengal waits with bated breath for May 4 Assembly election results
Political parties and people across the State are waiting with bated breath for counting of votes of the West Bengal Assembly elections on Monday (May 4, 2026).The Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has sought to return to power for the fourth consecutive term in the State. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the principal Opposition party, has attempted to defeat the Trinamool over the promise of “ paribortan (change)”.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left front, which administered the State for 34 years till 2011, allied with the Indian Secular Front to contest the 2026 polls. The Congress fielded candidates from all 294 seats, after a gap of 15 years.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday (May 3, 2026) said it would uphold the “highest standards of transparency, security and efficiency” during the counting of votes on Monday (May 4, 2026) for the elections to the Assemblies of Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry and the bye-elections in seven Assembly constituencies of five States.For West Bengal, the ECI had deployed 165 Additional Counting Observers to assist Counting Observers and 77 Police Observers to conduct “a secure, peaceful, intimidation-free and transparent environment”. Exuding confidence, the political parties and fronts in the States are also watching the counting preparations very closely.
