CPI(M) to discuss reasons for LDF poll debacle in Kozhikode, Cong. to examine Beypore defeat

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] is expected to go into serious deliberations soon into the reasons for the Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) debacle in the Assembly polls in Kozhikode district. The Congress, meanwhile, has said it will inspect the reasons behind the defeat of United Democratic Front (UDF)-backed Independent P.V. Anvar in Beypore.

The UDF won 12 of the 13 segments in Kozhikode when the Assembly election results were declared on Monday (May 4, 2026). The Left front’s victory was confined to Beypore, from where LDF candidate and former Public Works Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas managed to win. The setback was particularly embarrassing for the Left as those who lost included eight incumbent MLAs, including LDF convener T.P. Ramakrishnan, former Minister for Forests and Wildlife A.K. Saseendran. In the 2021 election, the LDF had won 11 of the 13 seats.

A senior CPI(M) leader from the district told The Hindu on Tuesday that the State secretariat of the party would soon evaluate the election results and discuss it in detail. “The State secretariat’s observations will then be sent to various district committees for deliberations. The inputs from the district committees will be sent back to the State committee, which will bring out a comprehensive report on the reasons for the front’s poor performance,” he said. The report would also contain corrective steps to be taken for reviving the electoral fortunes of the party, the CPI(M) leader added.
