IIT Guwahati staff offers bamboo an automobile-ready contact

GUWAHATI A staff of researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G) have fused bamboo with biodegradable polymers to develop a composite materials as an appropriate substitute for standard plastics utilized in automotive interiors.

The cost-effective and eco-friendly composite produced from Bambusa tulda, a fast-growing bamboo species grown throughout India’s northeast, has potential functions in furnishings, electronics, and packaging industries too, the researchers stated.

The staff stated properties reminiscent of excessive energy, thermal stability, and low moisture absorption make the composite a greener various to plastics.

The findings of the staff’s analysis had been printed within the journal Environment, Development and Sustainability. The paper is co-authored by Poonam Kumari, Professor within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and analysis students Abir Saha and Nikhil Dilip Kulkarni.

The IIT-G researchers examined 4 bamboo-based composite formulations consisting of Bambusa tulda fibres strengthened with bio-based or petroleum-based epoxies. By treating the bamboo fibres with alkali, the staff improved its compatibility with the bottom polymer, leading to enhanced sturdiness for real-world use.

The developed formulations had been then evaluated on 17 completely different parameters to check their tensile energy, thermal resistance, impression sturdiness, water absorption and price per kilogram, amongst others.

While these formulations had distinct strengths, none of them possessed all of the properties mandatory to supply a balanced and high-performing choice. To tackle the difficulty, the staff employed a structured analysis technique often known as Multi-Criteria Decision-Making.

The staff recognized the bamboo composite made with bio-based epoxy FormuLite because the best-performing choice with low moisture absorption, important thermal stability, and mechanical energy.

“The cost-effective nature of the composite, priced at ₹4300 per kilogram, makes it an eco-friendly resolution for automotive components, reminiscent of car dashboards, door panels and seat backs, amongst others,” the paper acknowledged.

“The developed composite can be utilized for designing elements/components in shopper electronics, cars, aerospace, sustainable constructing supplies, and many others. The product will exchange wooden, iron, or plastic elements and may have comparable value and assist fulfil the sustainable growth objectives,” Dr. Kumari stated.
