U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (January 20, 2026) he has agreed to a meeting with “various parties” this week about Greenland, as he steps up pressure on European leaders at Davos over his demand to take the Arctic island from NATO ally Denmark.

Mr. Trump is expected to dominate the week-long gathering of global elites at the Swiss ski resort, putting the transatlantic alliance to the test with his push to take over the Danish autonomous territory.

Europe is weighing countermeasures after Mr. Trump threatened to impose tariffs on eight European countries over the Greenland standoff — though Washington has warned that any retaliatory levies would be “unwise”.

Mr. Trump was not due to arrive at the World Economic Forum (WEF) until Wednesday (January 21), but was already overshadowing the agenda with a series of posts on his Truth Social platform, saying he had a “very good” call with NATO chief Mark Rutte over Greenland.

Time for flattering is over: Anders Fogh Rasmussen

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, a former Danish prime minister who led NATO from 2009 to 2014, urged the alliance’s current head, Mark Rutte, and other European leaders to start taking a tougher line with the U.S. President after he threatened tariffs.

“We have to change strategy and conclude that the only thing that Mr. Trump respects is force, strength and unity,” Mr. Rasmussen said.

“That’s exactly what Europe should demonstrate. The time for flattering is over. Enough is enough”, he said.

Mr. Rasmussen’s comments came as European leaders, including Mr. Rutte, brace for meetings with Mr. Trump in Davos to try to talk him down.

Mr. Rasmussen insisted the current crisis swirling around NATO could still be “fixed”, and the alliance could emerge stronger in the Arctic region.

But, he said, Mr. Trump’s actions had already created a “mental break” between Washington and its long-time European allies, which benefited Russia and China.

Mr. Rasmussen said he was not criticising leaders such as current NATO boss ‌Mr. Rutte, who has lavished praise on Mr. Trump.

He said the EU’s Anti-Coercion Instrument, the so-called “bazooka” that ‍confers broad powers to retaliate against economic pressure, should be on the table after Mr. Trump threatened tariffs on eight European nations until the U.S. ‍is allowed to buy Greenland.

“Arctic security can only be achieved together, and this is why the proposed additional tariffs are a mistake, especially between long-standing allies,” says Ms. von der Leyen in Davos.

“The European Union and the United States have agreed to a trade deal last July, and in politics as in business – a deal is a deal,” she said.

“Plunging us into a downward spiral would only aid the very adversaries we are both so committed ‌to keeping out of the strategic landscape, ‌so our response will be unflinching, united and proportional,” she says.

AI benefits must be distributed evenly to avoid it becoming a bubble: Nadella

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on Tuesday (January 20, 2026) said the goal of artificial intelligence should be to improve everyone’s lives, from education outcomes to public sector efficiency.

Speaking at a session here during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, Nadella said it will be a “tell-tale” sign of a bubble if all the AI talk focused only on the supply side or the technology companies.

He said the role of AI needs to be examined across all aspects of life, such as how it is helping pharma companies bring critical drugs faster to the market or accelerate trials.

He called for AI-driven economic growth rather than just increasing spending.

He spoke about how AI and other advanced technologies are increasing productivity and changing the way we work.

“We as a global community have to get to a point where we are using AI to do something useful that changes the outcomes of people and communities and countries and industries,” Mr. Nadella said. — PTI

Switzerland committed to rules-based global order, free trade: President Parmelin

Switzerland on Tuesday (January 20, 2026) said it supports a rules-based international order, international law, human rights, and free trade and these values have always defined the country.

In the opening plenary address at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting here, Swiss President Guy Parmelin said Switzerland wishes to further diversify its international relations, particularly in the trade and scientific fields.

“Even in the current climate of protectionism, we believe in the success of free trade and want to expand our network of agreements in this area,” he said.

To achieve this, we must be able to conduct negotiations on equal footing, negotiations that yield positive results for the benefit of all parties, he underlined.

“Such mutually advantageous agreements don’t just appear out of thin air, but we have the capacity to build them step by step. Personal contacts and a willingness to engage in dialogue are essential for this. We possess these qualities,” he said.

The President said the WEF has always contributed to this dialogue and thanked the Forum for offering the country, once again this year in Switzerland, this extraordinary international platform for exchange. — PTI

Indian CEOs more confident than global peers on GDP, revenue growth: PwC survey

Amidst a subdued global outlook, Indian CEOs are a lot more optimistic than their global peers on growth of their economy as well as their company revenues, a new survey showed in Davos.

Also, India has moved to the second place after the U.S. among global CEOs as a potential destination, up from fifth last year, as per the annual PwC CEOs survey released during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting.

It said just over half of global CEOs are expecting growth, but India stands out as an exception.

The survey found that striking 77% of India CEOs anticipate stronger domestic growth, and 57 per cent express high confidence in near-term revenue growth, nearly double the number of their global peers.

In a world defined by uncertainty, India’s ascent on the global investment map also stood out.

PwC said India is now among the top investment destinations. While 46% of global CEOs are not planning any investments, of those planning to invest beyond borders, 35% would like to invest in the U.S., while 13% each said they would like to invest in India, Germany, and the U.K.

Last year, India was in the fifth spot along with France on the list of territories global CEOs would like to invest in. — PTI

We’ll make Amaravati world’s best city, all are welcome to partner, says Chandrababu Naidu

Bullish on the growth trajectory of India and Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday (January 20, 2026) said he would make Amaravati the best and the most beautiful city in the world and everyone is welcome to be a partner in this endeavour.

Speaking at a breakfast session organised by his government along with industry chamber CII, he said every country is facing aging problem but India is continuing to reap the demographic benefits and that will continue for next 25-30 years.

Another big advantage India offers is a strong leadership in Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said.

“There are in-built strengths in India. It used to be a sleeping giant earlier and it used to be difficult to convince anyone of its potential. But now we don’t even need to tell anyone about India’s growth,” he said.

“We are all in inspiring times. India is moving fast and Andhra is growing even faster now…Earlier, we used to talk about ease of doing business and now we are talking about speed of doing business,” he said.

“We want to make everyone here a partner in growth of Andhra Pradesh,” Mr. Naidu said, as he recalled that it was his visit to Davos in 90s that inspired him to think how the world is moving and how Andhra should be moving forward.

The world is going to depend on India for talent, he said.

“I made Hyderabad the best livable city, now I want to make Amaravati the world’s best city and I invite partners for that,” he said.

India also offers a deadly combination of ample sunlight, wind and storage space for leading the world in green energy, the chief minister said, as he listed names of various sectors available for business in Andhra Pradesh and in India. — PTI

Hitachi India bets big on rail, energy, payments sectors; lauds faster implementations

Lauding the government for speeding up the implementation process for large projects, Hitachi India Chairman Bharat Kaushal said Japanese investment commitments are being utilised much faster now.

This is also leading to deal sizes getting much bigger now between India and Japan, while deals are no longer limited to the two governments, with a lot of private sector deals happening across equity, debt and partnerships, Kaushal told PTI here during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting.

Crediting the Indian government, he said implementation is one area that has really transformed in the past decade, whether it is the modernisation and expansion of Indian railways or metro urban mobility solutions.

Similarly, the energy sector has undergone a major transformation and is now increasingly horizontal, touching many, if not all, aspects of the economy, he said.

On focus areas for Hitachi in India, he said energy and rail are definitely big social and political priorities in India, and the economic might of these two cannot be matched easily by any other sector.

“We are seeing about USD 45-50 billion being spent in the rail sector, including urban mobility, and close to USE 40 billion being spent in energy,” he noted.

On India-Japan ties, he said, one of the things that has been very consistent is the economic engagement of Japan and India.

“You know, earlier our absorption capacity of a lot of Japanese funding that was coming was not getting absorbed at the same speed because there were implementation delays, and the Japanese companies’ hallmark is quality and reliability,” he said.

“What has transformed with this is that the size of the deal, the earnestness with which you push a deal have both changed.

“So the last time that I think it was in 2022, USD 42 billion were committed. More or less before the end of 2025, most of that money was spent already, and now commitments from the private sector are also coming,” he said. — PTI

Lodha Developers signs pact with Maharashtra government

Realty firm Lodha Developers Ltd has signed an initial pact with the Maharashtra government for an additional ₹1 lakh crore investment to build a data centre park.

The company, four months ago, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) of ₹30,000 crore with the state government to develop a data centre.

In a regulatory filing on Tuesday (January 20), the company said it has committed to another ₹1 lakh crore.

On January 19, Abhishek Lodha, MD and CEO of Lodha Developers, signed an MoU with the government of Maharashtra in the backdrop of the World Economic Forum at Davos.

With the additional ₹1 lakh crore, the total commitment has reached ₹1.3 lakh crore. “With the total investment of ₹1.3 lakh crore on approximately 2.5 gigawatt data centre park, it is slated to be the largest in the country,” Lodha Developers said.

Space next big place for data centres: Cisco

With AI and advanced computing creating a need for huge data centres, tech giant Cisco’s senior executive Jeetu Patel has said the world is very soon going to see space data centres.

Mr. Patel, president and Chief Product Officer at Cisco, said while green data centres are going to be very prominent soon, the next few years would witness those centres being built in the space to tackle infrastructure, mainly power, constraints.

When you think of data centres, all the cooling that’s required for the data centers is huge as 90 per cent of the weight in a rack tends to be the cooling infrastructure, he said.

It’s not the computer but the cooling that actually causes a huge amount of the weight, he said.

“When you go into space, you’ve got solar, the intensity of solar is much higher than what you have on Earth and so the cooling can tend to be at a very different level of economic proportion than what you do over here,” he said.

“And then the energy availability is much higher too. So I think there will be space data centres that are also being built out at the same time,” he said. — PTI

India most important market for us, will continue to invest there: Cisco

Tech giant Cisco sees India as a strategically very important market and will continue to invest there, its senior executive Jeetu Patel has said.

Speaking to PTI during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, the company’s President and Chief Product Officer said India accounts for the largest concentration of its people outside the U.S.

“Going ahead, India is a very strategic region for us and we have experienced tremendous amounts of growth over there,” he said.

“We continue to make sure that we actually are moving our manufacturing in some cases also there,” he said, while giving an example of the Chennai facility that was launched about a year ago.

“So, I think that India is a very strategic part of the world for us and we want to continue to keep investing in India,” he said.

Patel said there’s a very strong public private partnership culture in the country and Cisco has been very fortunate to work with the administration over there.

“Our goal is to continue to keep serving the best technologies that America produces so that they can have the best ability for generating tokens for AI,” he said.

Cisco works with a multitude of different industries in India and it wants us to continue to do that, he said.

Potential huge in India itself, no global plans for now: Swiggy

Anticipating sustained growth in its food delivery business, a top Swiggy executive said the company has yet to tap 85-90% of the market in India, and there are no plans for global expansion yet, given the huge potential available back home.

Speaking to PTI on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, Swiggy’s Food Marketplace CEO Rohit Kapoor said India still represents a fairly large opportunity for change, as there is nothing on the cards right now for global expansion.

And opportunities are there, not just in food but also in multiple other businesses across the country, he said.

In food, particularly, we have been guiding the markets to an 18-20% growth rate year-on-year, and I think trends are holding up to that even if you look at our last quarter numbers, he said.

Asserting that the food penetration level in India is way below not just Western numbers but even some Southeast Asian and Asian countries, he said this creates a huge headroom.

“I think the work cut out there is not just to grow food delivery, which roughly grows about two times the food market, but the entire food sector can grow a lot if the entire ecosystem and the government come together,” he said.

Asked about the size of the untapped market in India, he said it’s probably about 10-12% of India that has ever used food delivery, which means 85-90% has not.

“And then we have the emerging consumer class that will soon join the market,” he said. — PTI

AI democratizing intelligence in food delivery business: Swiggy executive

As AI expands into various aspects of life, top food delivery firm Swiggy’s Food Marketplace CEO Rohit Kapoor has said it is providing democratized intelligence to all stakeholders, ranging from its top management to delivery partners to restaurants.

Speaking to PTI on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, Mr. Kapoor said they are using Gen AI across their businesses and that it is already quite evolved.

“For example, somebody calls customer service, and I have the ability through Gen AI to understand the quality of that discussion, and I can do something about it immediately. That’s a power that Gen AI is unleashing,” he said.

“Most importantly, it’s democratizing a lot of things. It is telling restaurant partners what happened yesterday, which dishes moved, which didn’t. It helps our delivery partners understand where to go to get more maximum orders, and it has something for our leadership to understand what happened to the business yesterday,” he explained.

Along with AI, robotics plays a key role, including in warehouses, Mr. Kapoor said. — PTI

Opening concert marks the start of Davos 2026, Jon Batiste performs

The 56th World Economic Forum (WEF) kick-started on a musical note on January 19.

The concert mirrored this year’s meeting theme, A Spirit of Dialogue, Børge Brende, president and CEO of the World Economic Forum, observed in his welcoming remarks.

“Music knows no borders, it speaks no single language. A violin, a trumpet, a clarinet and a drum, they come together in perfect harmony, each unique, each essential, each voice making the whole more beautiful,” Mr. Brende said.

Andre Hoffmann, Vice-Chairman at Roche Holding and Interim Co-Chair at the World Economic Forum, emphasised that the concert sets the tone for the meeting.

He remarked, “The concert reflects the principles we seek to advance for the week: openness, collaboration, diversity and a responsibility to future generations.”

Larry Fink, Chair and CEO of BlackRock and Interim Co-Chair at the World Economic Forum, agreed and reflected on how the many genres of music all coming together in one concert perfectly represent the goals of this year’s Annual Meeting. He had also delivered some brief welcoming remarks earlier.

“To expose people to wider ranges of voices, to a wider range of ideas, maybe even an argument, but one that we have deeper understanding from,” Mr. Larry said.

After these welcoming remarks, the concert commenced with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra performing alongside acclaimed violinist Renaud Capucon. On a large LED screen behind the musicians, an AI-generated visual installation responded dynamically to their sounds, the brainchild of artist and technologist Ronen Tanchum. — ANI
