Editorial: A Geopolitical Shift – Maldives’ Lessons for Bangladesh’s Muhammad Yunus-led Interim Government

The Maldives, a small island nation in the Indian Ocean, has experienced a significant geopolitical shift in recent years. Its decision to distance itself from India, once a close ally, has resulted in a range of challenges that have impacted its economy, security, and overall well-being. These experiences offer valuable lessons for other nations, particularly Bangladesh, which is currently grappling with its own geopolitical dilemmas.  

Historically, India and the Maldives have enjoyed a strong bilateral relationship, characterized by cooperation in various spheres. India has been a major source of economic assistance, military support, and essential goods for the Maldives. However, in recent years, the Maldives has sought to diversify its foreign relations, exploring closer ties with other countries, including China. This shift has led to a decline in India’s influence in the country.  

The consequences of this geopolitical shift have been far-reaching. The Maldives has faced a significant loss in revenue and assistance from India. This has impacted sectors such as tourism, a crucial industry for the country. The decline in Indian tourists has had a cascading effect on related businesses, leading to job losses and economic hardship. Additionally, the Maldives has experienced shortages of essential goods, including food, medicines, and other supplies, due to the reduced flow of imports from India.  

The Maldives has also faced challenges in terms of security. India has traditionally played a vital role in ensuring the Maldives’ security, providing military assistance and intelligence sharing. The weakening of the bilateral relationship has raised concerns about the country’s vulnerability to external threats.  

Recognizing the negative consequences of its previous policy, the Maldives government has taken steps to mend its ties with India. India, in turn, has shown a willingness to re-engage with the Maldives, offering assistance and support. For example, India has extended a USD 50 million Treasury Bill for another year at the Maldivian government’s request and has agreed to allow the Maldives to extend loan repayment terms.  

The experiences of the Maldives provide valuable lessons for other nations, particularly Bangladesh, which is facing similar geopolitical pressures. Bangladesh’s relationship with India has been complex and multifaceted. While there have been periods of cooperation, tensions have also arisen over various issues. The Maldives’ experience demonstrates the importance of maintaining strong bilateral relationships, especially with neighboring powers.

By carefully considering the consequences of its foreign policy choices, Bangladesh can avoid the pitfalls that have plagued the Maldives. It is essential for Bangladesh to strike a balance between its domestic interests and its international obligations. By fostering cooperative relationships with its neighbors, including India, Bangladesh can ensure its economic prosperity, security, and overall well-being.
