The State authorities has recognized an alternate land in Coimbatore to arrange Tamil Nadu’s first Medical Devices Testing Laboratory.

Sources mentioned that one acre of land on the campus of the Coimbatore Medical College (CMC) on Avinashi Road close to Peelamedu has been recognized for institution of the power.

Though 1.28 acres of Revenue Department at Kavundampalayam was initially chosen to determine the laboratory, it couldn’t be finalised as a result of technical points in its allotment.

Tamil Nadu Drugs Control Department expedited the hunt for land with the assist of different Departments, which ended up within the allocation of 1 acre on CMC campus near Tidel Park, following an approval from the Directorate of Medical Education, mentioned sources.

They mentioned {that a} sum of ₹29.67 crore was allotted in 2024-25 for the institution of the laboratory, out of which 60% will probably be borne by the Centre and 40% by the State, below the centrally sponsored ‘Strengthening of State Drug Regulatory Systems’.

Though Tamil Nadu has drug testing laboratories at Chennai and Madurai, it lacks a authorities laboratory for the testing of medical units. The proposed laboratory would be the first facility in Tamil Nadu to check requirements of all medical units which were notified below the Medical Devices Rules, 2017.

Significant presence of producers of such units within the western area was one of many causes for having chosen Coimbatore as the placement for the laboratory, added sources.
