Chennai Metro Rail has created yet one more tunnel in hall 3 of the section II mission and eventually linked Greenways Road with Mandaveli on Saturday (October 18, 2025). Earlier, Chennai Metro Rail completed constructing a tunnel in hall 3, which connects Royapettah with Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai.

In the 118.9 km section II mission with three corridors—Madhavaram to SIPCOT (hall 3), Light House to Poonamallee (hall 4) and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (hall 5), all of them are deliberate as a mixture of elevated and underground networks. But hall 3 has the utmost extent of underground community. The complete size of this hall is 45.8 km and of this, 26.7 km travels underground. Corridor 3’s underground community commences at Madhavaram and passes via quite a few dense, residential, business areas together with Perambur, Ayanavaram, Purasawalkam, Kilpauk, Chetpet, Nungambakkam, Thousand Lights, Royapettah, Dr Radhakrishnan Salai, Greenways Road, Mandaveli, Adyar and Taramani. After Taramani, the hall is constructed elevated alongside the IT hall until SIPCOT.

The two tunnel boring machines (TBM) ‘Vaigai’ and ‘Noyyal’ started boring at Greenways Road almost two years again; of that, the machine ‘Vaigai’ made a breakthrough at Mandaveli on Saturday (October 18, 2025).

According to officers of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the full size of the tunnel was 775 metres from Greenways Road to Mandaveli, and the machines drilled beneath 75 buildings and densely built-up areas. Be it sewer strains, water and electrical energy strains, or the presence of varied utilities, it was very difficult to construct the shaft at Mandaveli.

Sources mentioned, the TBMs have been ready nearer to the station for fairly a while as there have been delays in ending the diaphragm wall of the Mandaveli station.

The machines bored via silty sand and sandy floor situations. As far because the machine ‘Vaigai’ is worried, the cutter head, a element of the TBM, was modified 13 instances. In November, the following machine, ‘Noyyal,’ too, will attain Mandaveli.
