The bus stand, intended to cater to services bound for southern districts and Vellakovil, was inaugurated by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on November 26, 2025, with operations commencing on December 4. However, private bus operators declined to shift services from the Corporation’s Central Bus Terminal and continued operating from the city, bypassing the new facility. Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) buses that initially operated from the Solar bus stand also reverted to the city terminal within a week, citing revenue losses.
At present, the Solar bus stand is used largely as a stopping point by TNSTC buses, with limited passenger footfall. Commuters using the facility complained about the presence of community dogs in large numbers. “Around 15 to 25 dogs can be seen at any time on the platforms and bus bays,” said a commuter from Kodumudi, adding that their presence has created fear among travellers.
The problem is reportedly aggravated by people feeding the dogs in and around the premises, leading to an increase in their numbers. Shopkeepers at the bus stand said the dogs remain on the premises continuously, posing a safety concern for passengers.
Though the civic body recently captured and sterilised over 15 dogs and released them back into the bus stand, shopkeepers said the measure had not addressed the issue, as the continued presence of the dogs remains a concern for commuters.
