Residents and commuters have expressed concern over the seepage of water on the subway beneath the road over bridge (ROB) at Edamalaipattipudur in recent days.

The ROB at Crawford was opened to traffic in 2014. Its subways at Anbu Nagar and Edamalaipattipudur regularly face issues with water stagnation, say residents. Over the past few days, users of the tunnel, especially those on two-wheelers, have been getting splashed with the water lying stagnant on the road.

While excessive stagnant water that collects during the monsoons is pumped out by authorities, the Edamalaipatti subway remains wet through the year even on sunny days.

Civic activists in the city said that the local administration authorities should make an effort to alert those in the charge to resolve infrastructure issues regularly. “Stagnant water can lead to mosquito infestation and create health hazards for the residents of the area. In general, subways in Tiruchi and Srirangam seem to face water seepage issues throughout the year,” said member of the Thanneer voluntary organisation.

When contacted, a senior Corporation official told The Hindu that a pump had been installed in the subway to automatically remove surplus water. “There is a problem in this area due to natural water table here, and possible mixing with sewage outflow. We have been pumping out the water automatically whenever there is surplus water. The recent stagnation could have been caused by a fault in the motor. The issue will be attended to at the earliest,” he said.
