Talking at a programme of Dakshina Kannada Pre University College Principals’ Association (DKPUPA) here on Saturday, Ms. Mahesh said every year lakhs of students leave education system after failing PU. Majority of these students are from government PU colleges, who belong to the weaker sections of society and are from poor economic backgrounds.
“When we lose them from the educational environment, the country and the State, in particular, lose huge human resources. We are not sure where they will land after discontinuing education. Therefore, the government is keen on bringing everyone to campus, post their PU examination, by bringing reforms to the existing system,” she said.
Reforms were being brought in the SSLC examination. The announcement will be made in the first week of January, 2026, she said.
She called upon ‘best PU minds’ of the region to give suggestions on revamping of the PU curriculum to make it relevant for students. Suggestions can be given on strengthening of government PU colleges. With institutes offering inter-sectional courses, namely ‘Cognitive Neuro Science’, students should be ready by the end of PU to make informed choice about their career path.
The government will be introducing computer science as an optional subject in science stream in the 50 new government PU colleges that are coming up. The government was also looking at computer science as an optional subject in the commerce stream in the new PU colleges. Artificial Intelligence will be introduced to students from the primary school level in the new Karnataka Public Schools, she said.
