Hyderabad Home Guard death: Goods carrier driver had no valid licence, likely dozed off at wheel while driving

The driver of the goods carrier involved in the fatal accident that killed a Hyderabad Traffic Police Home Guard on Attapur road on Tuesday afternoon (December 23, 2025), did not have the licence to drive the particular vehicle and is suspected to have fallen asleep while driving, police said.

The accused, identified as 21-year-old M. Uday Kiran, a native of Dharmapuram village in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, did not hold a licence to drive a heavy motor vehicle or a valid transport licence, both of which are required to operate a goods carrier.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Kiran may have dozed off at the wheel and rammed into a two-wheeler from behind. The accident was reported near pillar number 192 of the P. V. Narasimha Rao (PVNR) Expressway when the deceased, 40-year-old Syed Abdul Sattar, a home guard attached to the Tolichowki traffic police station, was returning home to Attapur after completing his duty.

The impact flung Sattar off his two-wheeler, causing severe injuries that led to his death on the spot, police said.

“The negligence was entirely on the part of the goods carrier driver. He had no heavy vehicle licence and was authorised only to drive a light motor vehicle. He also lacked a transport licence, which is mandatory for carrying goods,” a senior police official associated with the investigation said, adding that the driver’s inexperience likely contributed to the crash as he could not maneuver the vehicle in time.

Investigators found that Kiran had been travelling overnight. He had loaded fruits and vegetables in Anantapur, transported them to the Bowenpally vegetable market in the early hours of Tuesday, and was returning to his hometown when the accident occurred.

The goods carrier has been seized and sent for mechanical inspection to rule out any technical failure. Kiran is currently being questioned by the police.

According to Tolichowki Traffic Inspector, G. Venkateshwarlu, Sattar had reported for duty early on Tuesday and worked the morning shift from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Banjara Darwaza before heading home.

Sattar had been serving with the Tolichowki traffic police since 2021. He is survived by his wife and four children — two daughters and two sons. The Attapur police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.
