The Kamarajar Port is all set to handle large windmill components like blades and towers, a move that could increase its cargo throughput and revenue drastically.

This will be a huge benefit for windmill and wind turbine manufacturers in Chennaiwho would be able to import and export windmill components from this port, according to sources.

According to officials of Kamarajar Port Limited (KPL), at present, the V.O. Chidambaranar Port (VOC Port) in Thoothukudi stands as the centre for both export and import of these components.

Cost-cutting

“It would take about five days for these companies to transfer their cargo from Thoothukudi. These companies can significantly cut down on their logistics cost and transit time by transporting it via Kamarajar Port. When we facilitate the movement of windmill blades and towers, it can substantially improve our cargo throughput and revenue,” an official said.

As a first step towards this, KPL signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with one of the world’s leading wind turbine manufacturers Nordex India Pvt. Ltd., worth ₹7,000 crore to handle and store windmill components in  October.

It is to be noted that a crucial access road is essential for smooth transport of over-dimensional cargo like windmill blades which have a large radius.The Northern Port Access Road, which forms the first section of the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road (CPRR) will be completed by the end of 2026 and will enable shifting of such windmill blades.

Sources said, the port will also create storage yards for windmill components, modification of internal roads, strengthen the existing yards in case of additional storage to handle windmill blades as long as 75-90 metres.

“This strategic connectivity [of Northern Port Access Road connectivity through the CPRR-section 1] will make Kamarajar Port a feasible and cost-effective gateway for industries located in the hinterland of Chennai, reducing logistics costs and transit time for both export and import of cargo,” another official said.
