Police said officers responded to a call around 12:15 AM near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue in Hollywood. According to an LAPD statement, investigators determined that Sutherland entered a ride-share vehicle, physically assaulted the driver and made what police described as “criminal threats” during the encounter. The driver did not sustain injuries requiring medical treatment.
Sutherland was arrested at the scene and booked into Los Angeles County jail. Jail records show that he was later released after posting a $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on February 2. Representatives for the actor did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The 59-year-old Canadian actor is best known for his role as counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer on the television series 24. His film career includes appearances in titles such as A Few Good Men, The Lost Boys, Flatliners and Dark City. He also starred as the U.S. president in the series Designated Survivor. Sutherland is the son of late actor Donald Sutherland.
The incident remains under investigation by the LAPD’s Hollywood Division, and authorities have not released further details about what led to the confrontation.
Sutherland has faced legal issues in the past. In 2007, he was sentenced to 48 days in jail for driving under the influence and violating probation. He was arrested on suspicion of assault in 2009, though that charge was later dropped. In 2020, he was cited following an illegal U-turn in Hollywood.
No formal charges beyond the arrest have yet been announced in the current case. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is expected to review the matter ahead of Sutherland’s court appearance.
