Speaking at the State Police Conference, the Chief Minister said his government, after assuming office in 2021, had filled around 800 vacancies in the department. The government has already initiated steps to fill around 70 Sub-Inspector posts, he said.
“We want to increase the strength of police personnel in Puducherry, considering the present and future requirements. For that, more posts must be created. We have approached the Central government for sanction to create posts. The government is hopeful of getting permission,” he said.
In his address, Home Minister A. Namassivayam said the Puducherry Police have come in for praise at the recently held annual police conference in Chhattisgarh. The Prime Minister and Home Minister have complimented the police for filing the charge sheet in 82% of cases within the mandatory 60 days, as per guidelines prescribed in the new criminal laws.
In certain cases, the charge sheet has to be filed within 90 days. In such cases, the police were able to file charge sheet in 89% of the cases within the prescribed time, he said. “Our Bahour police station is ranked 8th among the best police stations in the country,“ he said.
He requested the police to ensure that law and order remained under control during the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. The police should gear up for the upcoming Assembly polls, too, he said.
Speaker R. Selvam, Chief Secretary Sharat Chauhan, Director-General of Police Shalini Singh, and senior officials attended the meeting.
