Sreenivasan needed just two films to cement his legacy as a director

“The five hundred movies I didn’t do is my biggest contribution to Malayalam cinema,” Sreenivasan once quipped in his trademark sarcastic style.

Remaining true to that philosophy, the genial filmmaker directed only two movies, separated by almost a decade. It was not that he lacked the ability to direct more, but appeared rather a conscious decision to stop at two, confident that those films alone would leave a lasting mark. They did just that, winning six State awards between them and continuing to remain relevant decades later.

A timeline of Malayalam film stalwart Sreenivasan’s legacy

Senior Malayalam actor Sreenivasan’s death on December 20 leaves the industry without a stalwart actor, director, scriptwriter and scenarist who had developed a name in the space with over 220 films.

Sreenivasan’s massive footprint in Malayalam cinema goes back to 1976, to his first film debut as an actor in the film Manimuzhakkam. As a scriptwriter, he thought of scenes as ways to show character details, with the characters being nuanced beyond the stereotypical traits of a ‘hero’.

Even those who disagreed with him respected his abilities: CM Pinarayi Vijayan

Expressing grief, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the demise of the actor was an irreparable loss to Malayalam cinema. Mr. Sreenivasan had familiarised himself with all aspects of cinema and played the hero too. Not many were successful in depicting the common man’s life so successfully on the silver screen or prodding the audience to ponder over what he wanted them to through humour and ideas. He was very successful in presenting his perspectives on society through satire on screen. Even those who disagreed with him respected his abilities. His talents spread across story writing, scripting, directing, and acting, and he left his mark on each of them.

From Poland to Pavanayi: How Sreenivasan’s dialogues became Kerala’s meme currency

“Polandine kurichu oraksharam parayaruth” (Don’t utter a word about Poland).

If ever there were a contest for the most popular and oft-repeated film dialogue, this line from Sandesham, written by Sreenivasan, would likely win. Delivered by the Left-affiliated elder brother, played by Sreenivasan himself, during a heated political debate with his younger brother and political opponent, portrayed by Jayaram, the dialogue has become a reference point in a wide variety of contexts, not the least in politics.

Sreenivasan, a scriptwriter like no other

Sreenivasan was a fabulous actor. But he was even more fantastic as a scriptwriter.

When we talk of the greatest scriptwriters of Malayalam cinema, the names of M.T. Vasudevan Nair, P. Padmarajan and A.K. Lohithadas come up for discussion. Sreenivasan should also be part of that list.

True, he may not have written the greatest of dramas, romances or fantasies like them, he may not have dealt with that many serious issues, his world may not have been as wide and varied, or his plots may not have been ground-breaking, but we have to acknowledge one thing: he was a gifted scriptwriter and no one in Indian cinema probably understood the art of comedic writing as much as he did. And it was no slapstick humour he wrote.

Sreenivasan, a Thalassery legend, becomes part of history: A tribute

The cliched references to Thalassery, a coastal town in Kerala’s Malabar, often centres around the three Cs — cricket, cakes and circus. There is historical validity to these attributions, and in the 1980s and 1990s, a touch of notoriety was added too due to a spate of political murders.

Often a Thalassery native, conscious of the blood and gore, would mention his place as Kannur or Kozhikode before getting more granular and mentioning a village close to Thalassery. The stigma was real before Sreenivasan became a crutch to lean on. “Oh from Thalassery, you know our Sreenivasan’s place,” would be the proud refrain.

When the creative genius passed away on Saturday, leaving a fine body of celluloid work, the geographical axis between Thalassery and Koothuparambu lost its favourite son. Sreenivasan, 69, had a flair for the theatrical from a young age.

We shared a strong bond: Filmmaker Sathyan Anthikad remembers longtime friend and collaborator Sreenivasan

Veteran filmmaker Sathyan Anthikad is among those who feel a heavy vacuum as actor-director-screenwriter Sreenivasan, who passed away on Saturday.

The duo played what could be termed a lifelong innings that created a space of its own in the Malayalam cinema universe. For over four decades, they kept talking to each other about all and sundry and “cinema happened in between” in Mr. Anthikad’s own words.

They had shared a bond so strong that Mr. Anthikad ran short of words while reacting to the news of Mr. Sreenivasan’s passing. “I’m in a situation where I can’t respond. We have had a strong bond with each other. I used to visit him once in two weeks (since he became ill). I never thought he would leave this soon,” Mr. Anthikad told reporters.

Sreenivasan: the satirist who made Kerala laugh, think, and remember

It is perhaps a coincidence that curtains have fallen on the iconic filmography of actor, scenarist and director Sreenivasan, spanning nearly half a century, at a time when memes based on his evergreen political satire Sandesham are still circulating widely on social media to interpret the results of the recently held local body polls in Kerala.

In fact, Sandesham has never faded from public memory, even more than three decades after its theatrical release. Every political controversy or election since then has brought the film back into the limelight, especially after the advent of social media and memes. That relevance is unlikely to diminish even in the future, following the demise of its creator.
