Sumalatha Kandharaj, an art tutor at the academy, stated that the showcase—featuring the work of 12 students—was designed to enlighten the audience on the vital importance of prioritising mental health.
She noted that meditative art falls under the broader category of therapeutic art, which plays a significant role in the healing process for those facing mental health challenges.
“Each of the 12 students contributed five paintings, exploring the vast and often overlooked intersection of art and mental health,” Ms. Kandharaj pointed out.
Elaborating on the therapeutic power of creativity, she said, “Some emotions are too tangled, painful, or confusing to be captured by verbal language. Abstract art bypasses words, speaking directly through movement and color. It enables individuals to express their true feelings, even when they cannot fully articulate them.”
She further explained that art serves as a mirror to the subconscious, revealing hidden themes, patterns, and memories. By reflecting one’s inner landscape, the process helps individuals gain a clearer understanding of themselves.
“We believe this exhibition will encourage students to create more frequently. These sessions not only result in beautiful art pieces but also serve as essential stressbusters in their daily lives,” she added.
