According to police, Murthy and his two sons together with Thangapandian, who have been working and residing at a farm, have been concerned in an altercation inebriated. During the dispute, Thangapandian allegedly assaulted his father.

Neighbours alerted the police by means of the emergency helpline 100. Special Sub-Inspector Shanmugavel and constable Azhagu Raja (35), hooked up to the Gudimangalam police station and on patrol responsibility close by, responded to the decision and reached the scene round 11 p.m. Shanmugavel reportedly separated the 2 males and organized for Murthy to be despatched to hospital in an ambulance.
Thangapandian, allegedly angered by the intervention, attacked Shanmugavel with a pointy weapon, killing him on the spot. He then tried to assault Azhagu Raja, who managed to flee and alert the police station. Thangapandian fled the spot and a hunt is on to hint him.
Stalin expresses shock
Expressing deep shock and sorrow over the incident, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.Ok. Stalin introduced a compensation of ₹1 crore to the household of the deceased police officer. In a press release on Wednesday, he described the killing as an irreparable loss to the Tamil Nadu police and to the officer’s household.
“I used to be deeply shocked to listen to of this tragic incident. The dying of Shanmugavel is an irreparable loss to each the Tamil Nadu Police Department and to his household. I’ve directed the police to swiftly apprehend the culprits concerned on this act,” he added.
