Visakha Utsav off to a colourful start

The much-awaited Visakha Utsav-2026 commenced on a grand and colourful note here on Saturday, drawing huge crowds and creating a festive mood in the city.

The celebrations began with a spectacular carnival showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Uttarandhra, featuring traditional folk arts such as Tappeta Gullu, Puli Veshalu, Dhimsa, and vibrant tribal dances. The carnival also saw enthusiastic participation from local artisans, sportspersons, youth groups, elected public representatives, and citizens from all walks of life.

The carnival was flagged off at the GVMC Aqua Sports Complex by Home Minister V. Anitha, Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh, and Minister Dola Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy. State TDP president and Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao and several MLAs and senior officials were present.

The colourful procession passed via the Kali Matha Temple route and culminated at Gokul Park.

A massive stage was set up at R.K. Beach to host the main programme. Adding charm to the event, noted television anchor Suma hosted the inaugural event, keeping the audience engaged with her lively presence.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Durgesh said the tourism sector witnessed a complete revival under the NDA government. He emphasised that tourism was being given top priority, citing the successful organisation of various festivals over the past year, including the Flamingo Festival, Avakai Amaravathi and others.

With the event falling on the weekend, the Beach Road witnessed a massive turnout. Cultural programmes highlighting local talent enthralled the audience. The highlight of the evening was the musical night by noted playback singer Sunitha, whose melodious tracks mesmerised the large crowd and drew thunderous applause.

Several stalls offering food, handicrafts, and local products were set up along the Beach Road, along with dedicated play arenas and fun games for children.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Durgesh launched helicopter joyrides at Rushikonda Beach as part of the Visakha Utsav, offering visitors a unique aerial view of the coastal city.
