Access to non-farm enterprise, irrigation considerably reduces local weather change-induced rural migration, says IIT Madras research

Researchers from the Statistical Department of IIT Madras have studied information from the India Human Development Survey (IDHS) and located that entry to non-farm enterprise and irrigation considerably reduces rural migration that’s attributable to drought, which in flip is local weather change induced.

The IDHS research is a nationally consultant, multi-topic panel survey of 1000’s of households in city and rural areas throughout the nation. The findings of the research led by Sabuj Kumar Mandal, Professor of Economics, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Madras, and Gauri Sreekumar, Researcher, IIT Madras, have been printed within the Indian Economic Review.

Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Mandal mentioned that they used information from Round I (2004-2005) and Round II (2011-2012) information of the IHDS for practically 2 years and studied 80,000 households. “The influence of drought on the migration amongst rural farm households was estimated utilizing the Difference-in-differences technique, a statistical method utilized in economics and quantitative analysis to check the differential impact of a therapy group versus a management group in an experiment.”

“We have used local weather information from the India Meteorological Department for drought and rainfall data. People migrate from one state to a different, like from West Bengal and Odisha to Tamil Nadu. Erratic rainfall, which is lower than the long-term common, results in crop failure after which very unstable agricultural revenue causes such migration,” he defined.

Ms. Sreekumar mentioned that to scale back the chance imposed by drought, households flip to non-farm actions to scale back the dependence of households’ revenue on crop yields. This revenue is used to buy crop and livestock inputs, enhance expertise and manufacturing applied sciences, thus rising agricultural productiveness. In flip, the revenue helps to organize for disasters and compensate for any revenue loss.

The research additionally discovered that households’ participation in agriculture/milk/different cooperatives, non-government organisations, credit score/financial savings teams, self-help teams, and different such associations may verify migration. Farmer-based organisations and extra agricultural extension providers could possibly be established by the Government.

The group has recommended that various livelihoods like unskilled jobs be created close to their villages. In the subsequent stage, the researchers plan to check the behaviour and psychological farmers that drive farmers emigrate and causes of those that don’t.
