Association of University Teachers opposes Private Universities Amendment Bill

The Association of University Teachers (AUT), Tamil Nadu, has opposed the State authorities’s transfer to amend the Tamil Nadu Private Universities Act, 2019 making a provision to transform government-aided schools into personal universities beneath a ‘Brown discipline University’ nomenclature.

In a press release on Wednesday, the AUT expressed concern over possible exorbitant price hike for college students, job menace to lecturers and non-teaching employees, and a direct impression on the reservation coverage thereby affecting social justice.

The assertion mentioned that the transfer would shift the admission course of from a merit-based system to a money-based one which might have a bearing on alternatives for poor college students. It said that just about two lakh Arts and Science college students and 40,000 engineering college students could be affected, each when it comes to reservation and price construction.

Teachers in these schools loved salaries paid by the federal government as per UGC and Ministry of Education norms, service circumstances ruled by the Private Colleges Regulation Act, 1976 and the Grant-in-Aid Scheme of the State, and go away guidelines, dearness allowance, well being fund, and pension advantages as per authorities norms. The assertion, undersigned by AUT basic secretary Okay. Raja, mentioned that when the universities have been transformed to non-public universities, these advantages would stop to exist.

It urged the federal government to drop the Bill within the bigger curiosity of equitable, reasonably priced, and high quality increased training within the State.
