Death linked to cow vigilantes sparks protest in Maharashtras Ahilyanagar

Residents and activists from Galnimb village of Rahuri taluka in Maharashtra’s Ahilyanagar staged a protest at Kolhar Chowk on Friday (October 31, 2025), demanding a speedy and neutral investigation into the loss of life of a 17-year-old boy belonging to the Dhangar group.

The teenager was discovered useless on October 28 after allegedly being assaulted by cow vigilantes a day earlier.

According to the sufferer’s cousin, the Class 12 pupil had bought a cow from Chincholi Phata village, about 6-7 km from his house. He was transporting the animal in a car when he was intercepted close to Kolhar by 4 males claiming to be ‘gau rakshaks’.

“These males routinely harass individuals and extort cash starting from ₹5,000 to ₹5 lakh,” the cousin stated. The assailants reportedly referred to as {the teenager} a cow smuggler, chased and beat him with iron rods and sticks, abused him, and live-streamed the assault on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

In the afternoon, the accused introduced the cow and the car to the police station and filed a criticism in opposition to the boy, the Loni police stated. By night, the video had gone viral on social media.

“The teen felt humiliated,” stated Police Sub-Inspector Sanjay Vikhe.

The subsequent day, round 12 midday, he was discovered useless in his hut.
