The Manipur authorities on Friday (October 10, 2025) banned two manufacturers of cough syrup discovered to include a “highly toxic chemical”.

The Drugs Control Department has prohibited the sale and consumption of those two merchandise in Manipur and directed all retailers, distributors, and pharmacies to right away withdraw the affected batches from cabinets and report compliance.

A press release by the Drugs Control Administration below the Directorate of Health Services issued a “public alert warning consumers, retailers, and healthcare providers against the purchase and use of two cough syrup brands found to be adulterated with a highly toxic chemical, diethylene glycol.”

It stated experiences from the Madhya Pradesh Government Drug Testing Laboratory confirmed that the syrups “Relife” and “Resipfresh TR”, each manufactured in Gujarat, have been contaminated with diethylene glycol, a poisonous industrial solvent identified to trigger acute poisoning, kidney failure and even demise.

Surveillance has been intensified throughout medical retailers and hospitals within the state to forestall additional distribution of the 2 cough syrups.

Healthcare suppliers have been suggested to remain alert for signs of diethylene glycol poisoning in sufferers who might have consumed the syrups, the assertion stated.
