MP objects to removing of Arabic, Mahal beneath NEP in Lakshadweep

The Lok Sabha MP has despatched a letter to UT Administrator Praful Okay Patel demanding the suspension of the May 14 order and reinstatement of the 2 languages as non-compulsory languages beneath the three language method.

While Arabic is taught in colleges as an non-compulsory language in all of the islands of the UT, Mahal, a dialect of the Maldivian language of Divehi, is spoken and taught completely within the island of Minicoy of Lakshadweep.

In his letter, shared with HT, the MP stated that Arabic and Mahal will not be simply educational topics in Lakshadweep however integral to the ‘cultural identity, community life and early literacy’s of the folks of the UT.

While Arabic is the first language of spiritual instruction and sometimes the primary language that the kids of the Muslim majority inhabitants learn and write in, Mahal is the one indigenous language of the Minicoy island, the MP stated within the letter dated May 20.

The schooling division order added Hindi because the third language and excluded Arabic and Mahal. English and Malayalam are the opposite two obligatory languages taught in colleges.

The MP stated that the order was issued after colleges had been closed for summer time holidays and with out correct consultations with dad and mom, academics and different stakeholders.

The modifications, he stated, would compel college students in lessons from I to IX to arbitrarily shift to languages they haven’t any practical proficiency in.

There have been huge public protests in UT and particularly Minicoy over the schooling division order.

“The education system in Lakshadweep must not become a vehicle for cultural exclusion or academic disruption,” the MP stated within the letter.
