Pakistan’s Denial of Targeting Religious Places and False Claims Debunked

New Delhi – India today categorically rejected Pakistan’s denials regarding the targeting of religious places during recent cross-border shelling and dismissed Islamabad’s “preposterous and outrageous claim” that India was attacking its own cities. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) exposed these as key elements of Pakistan’s ongoing disinformation campaign.

During a detailed briefing, the MEA spokesperson directly addressed Pakistan’s attempts to mislead the narrative surrounding the events of May 7th, 8th, and 9th, 2025. The spokesperson stated that Pakistan’s claims that they did not target or attack any religious places were false. “You would recall that yesterday I shared with you an incident related to the attack on a gardara in Punch,” the spokesperson said, reiterating the fact of the attack.

Instead of acknowledging the attack on the Gurdwara in Poonch, Pakistan made the “preposterous and outrageous claim that it was the Indian armed forces and the Indian air force that was targeting cities like Amritser and trying to put the blame on Pakistan.” The MEA spokesperson firmly stated that this was “nothing but a desperate attempt by Pakistan to disown its acts of aggression.”

The spokesperson highlighted that this behavior is “true to type in its effort to deceive and mislead the world,” adding confidently, “It will not succeed.” The attack on the Gurdwara in Poonch was confirmed to have resulted in the loss of lives of some local members of the Sikh community, including the Ragi of the Gurdwara, as previously shared.

The MEA also addressed Pakistan’s disinformation circulating about India allegedly targeting the Nankana Sahib Gurdwara through a drone attack. This was firmly labeled as “yet another blatant lie and part of Pakistan’s disinformation campaign.” The spokesperson stated that, similar to the Pahalgam attack, Pakistan is “again trying desperately to impart a communal hue to the situation with an intention to create discord.” The response from the Indian side was, “Again, we are not surprised. India’s steadfast unity in itself is a challenge to Pakistan.”

Furthermore, the MEA provided details of other attacks on religious institutions, including the shelling near the Christ School and a Christian convent in Poonch. These incidents, where a Pakistani shell killed two schoolchildren and another damaged convent infrastructure, were presented as further evidence of Pakistan’s deliberate targeting of places of worship across different faiths – Gurdwaras, convents, and temples. The spokesperson characterized this as seeing the Pakistani side “targeting and shelling places of worship with a particular design,” calling it a “new low even for Pakistan.”

The MEA briefing, which included technical details on the Pakistani attacks and India’s response from Colonel Qureshi and Wing Commander Singh, aimed to counter Pakistan’s false narratives with verified information and expose their attempts to manipulate the situation through disinformation and by trying to create communal tensions.
