Sivankutty writes to Union Labour Minister demanding withdrawal of labour codes

Labour Minister V. Sivankutty on Friday wrote to Union Minister of Labour and Employment Mansukh L. Mandaviya urging the Ministry to immediately withdraw the labour codes in their present form. He conveyed the State government’s deep concern that several provisions in these codes have overlooked crucial aspects of labour rights, workers’ welfare, and the foundational values of social justice in India.

“Kerala, after broad consultations with trade unions and workers, has found that the codes dilute essential protections related to job security, collective bargaining, safe working conditions, and mechanisms ensuring labour welfare. We believe that these changes will be detrimental to the interests of workers and will disrupt industrial peace in the country,” wrote Mr. Sivankutty.

He also expressed serious concern that despite labour being a subject in the concurrent list, the reforms were brought about without adequate and meaningful consultation with the State governments and stakeholders like the central trade unions. Genuine participation and dialogue are essential in addressing the legitimate concerns of those most directly affected.

Broad-based and transparent consultations have to be initiated urgently, involving State governments, trade unions, and all stakeholders, so that any future reforms reflect the collective aspirations of Indian workers and uphold the rights and welfare that are foundational to our democracy, he wrote.
