The victim, Shahnaz Khatun, is the daughter of Inzamam Sheikh, a migrant labourer from West Bengal. According to the police, Inzamam Sheikh saw the child playing in front of the family’s makeshift house when he briefly returned home for lunch.
He told the police that he also noticed a man, later identified as Yusuf Meer, a native of West Bengal who lived near their residence, in the vicinity at the time.
A few minutes later, when the parents realised Shahnaz was missing, they began searching for her. Her body was later found in a drain nearby.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the girl was strangled to death. Police said there was no sign of sexual assault, and added that the murder appeared to have been committed due to personal vengeance.
Based on a complaint by the family, the Whitefield police have registered a case of murder. They are searching for the suspect.
However, a distraught Inzamam Sheikh told the police that he had no personal enmity or financial dispute with the suspect.
Further investigation is underway.
