A bunch of 12 fishermen from Karaikal, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai districts was arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy within the early hours of Sunday (September 28, 2025) on fees of poaching in Sri Lankan waters. Their boat was confiscated by the Navy.

Sources within the Fisheries Department in Karaikal mentioned the 12 fishermen ventured into the ocean on board a mechanised boat from the Karaikal fishing harbour within the early hours of September 25.

The sources mentioned the fishermen have been apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy round 2:40 a.m. on Sunday whereas fishing. According to the Sri Lankan Navy web site, the fishermen have been “poaching” within the island nation’s waters off the Delft island in Jaffna.

The Fisheries Department in Karaikal has recognized the arrested fishermen as: T. Vasanthan, 39, of Akkampettai in Karaikal; D. Selvam, 44, of Kottucherrymedu in Karaikal; D. Sundhar, 27, of Kottucherrymedu; D. Velmurugan, 43, of Kottucherrymedu; G. Kandhasamy, 55, of Kottucherrymedu; G. Balaguru, 45, of Kottucherrymedu; C. Vasanth, 24, of Kilinjalmedu in Karaikal; E. Kesavan, 19, of Pattinacherry in Karaikal; V. Srimurugan, 22, of Pattinacherry; T. Murugaiyan, 45, of Pattinacherry; R. Thulasinathan, 30, of Keechankuppam in Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu; and G. Vaithi, 35, of Kuttiyandiyur in Mayiladuthurai district in Tamil Nadu. 

The arrested fishermen and the seized boat have been dropped at the Kankesanthurai harbour within the island nation and handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Mailadi for additional authorized proceedings, the web site additional mentioned.
