New Year, Happy Me

New year is upon us, and as always the conversation turns to growth and improvement. Whilst we might have long forgotten the Special K diet and the weight loss resolutions of the 2000s, the emphasis on women’s bodies still reigns. Everyone is desperately trying to better themselves, assigning lists of resolutions and improvements to their everyday lives.

Whilst the messaging can feel negative, we’re here to remind you just how positive the new year can be, and how to make the most of the season.

This year, at Curvy Kate, we challenge you to make one single resolution (one we’ve been making since 2009) and that’s to love yourself.

It’s no secret our bras are all about feeling confident, but this is something we carry throughout everything we do. And confidence isn’t always the easiest feeling to embody, especially in today’s society. But it’s not impossible to start loving yourself.

The blueprint

Happy Movement

Instead of boring workouts, opt for mindful movement- exercise that you look forward to and feels good, taking time to rest when your body needs it. Try different classes, make it sociable or get some fresh air. Exercise is like a bra, one sizes definitely doesn’t fit all, and just like some bras are better suited to certain days, some exercise is for different days, times or moments.

Ditch the doomscroll

Ditch the social media- not forever, but take some time away from the screen each day, be present in the world and enjoy people’s company. We know how damaging our TikTok algorithms can be (not our page though!), so step away from the online spaces and really sock up the world around you.

Take pride

Be proud of your body, push it out of its comfort zone, challenge it, relish in what you are capable of. There is nothing more empowering than feeling capable- even if it’s just reflecting on how far you’ve come, or carrying the super heavy shopping bags from the car in one trip. We’re often very blind to our own strength and forget just how much power we hold. Celebrate those small and big achievements.

Smile

A small but simple one- smile. Smile at yourself in the mirror as you do you make up, smile at others, smile in pictures, smile at strangers. We’re too critical and too caught up in our own worlds sometimes. But smiling really tricks you brain into happiness, and there is something very magical about getting a smile back from a stranger. Smiling at ourselves in the mirror also helps eliminate any negative thoughts and reinforces the happy ones.

The rocket science

But mostly, let yourself live and enjoy the world around you. Self-love might be an unachievable feeling buzz word, but in practice, its an everyday feeling, a background task as easy as breathing when you know how to do it. Being gentle and kind with ourselves is the best place to start!
