Fitness is necessary but we need more players with unique personalities too, says Gade

As one of the legends of badminton, Peter Gade shared the spotlight in his prime with some of the biggest names in the sport. Now as co-founder of the Legends’ Vision, the Dane hopes to spread his passion around the world. In its 10th year now and returning to India with the Legacy Tour after eight years, the Legends’ Vision has on-boarded Saina Nehwal and Carolina Marin as the first women stars associated with the project. “We started this 10 years ago and now we believe this is the right place and time to expand it, the second coming of the vision. “India is a growing powerhouse in badminton with several exciting players coming up and it’s a privilege to work with Saina Nehwal to build something meaningful here,” Gade told the The Hindu in an exclusive chat on the sidelines of launching the community project ‘A Racquet’s Second Life’ that aims at encouraging people to donate used rackets for the less privileged. A multiple World Championships medallist and one of the most successful men on the professional tour Gade, now a coach, admitted the sport has changed a lot. “I think it has become a lot more fitness oriented but we have to also remember that the number of tournaments have also increased. In that sense it’s getting closer to tennis, where players are travelling with a huge support group. “But I think it will be good if along with fitness, there is a lot more personality also seen. Now, everyone follows everyone else and there are no secrets but I would love to See More players with distinct skills and individuality because that’s what makes the sport exciting,” Gade declared.
