“The main reason is hunger, and that comes with a vision. I was and I’m still full of hunger,” Bhullar said, speaking to The Hindu on the sidelines of an event. “I am an 11-time winner (on the Asian Tour), I would love to go to 12, 13, 14, 15, I think I still have the ability to go and win more. But where is the depth in the ranks?”
The 37-year-old has earned boasting rights over the years. He remains the last Indian to win a title on the Asian Tour (Indonesia Masters, November 2023) and the DP World Tour, formerly the European Tour (Fiji International, August 2018). He is also the only constant presence on the Asian Tour, retaining his full card for 2026.
The other four this year — Shaurya Bhattacharya, Rashid Khan, Ajeetesh Sandhu and Shubham Jaglan — managed to get one through the Qualifying School. Last year on the IGPL Tour, he won three of the five events he participated in.
“I’m not happy about that. That’s not a stat to be proud of. If you look at the global scene, we are at an all-time low. It is not a moment to celebrate for Indian golf,” he said bluntly.
He believes the youngsters have every advantage the older pros didn’t but was clear it was up to them to decide their priorities. “When I talk to the youngsters who have had a great season, earned maybe 50 lakhs or 1 crore, they’re enjoying the monetary benefits of golf. But that’s not the right measure of success.
“You’ve got to step up and win. Being in the top-20 or top-5 is not good enough. I hope many of these youngsters follow me on the Asian Tour.
“The next generation should be investing in themselves, going to the Q School or wherever they feel comfortable. Even when I was not on the European tour, I used to go to the USA and train for months. That is missing now,” he shrugged.
