India has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026-28 time period, marking the nation’s seventh stint on the Geneva-based rights physique.

Announcing the outcomes of the election held on Tuesday (October 14, 2025), the UNHRC in a social media publish stated India’s three-year time period will start on January 1, 2026.

Council seats are allotted to the 5 regional teams as follows: African States, 13 seats; Asia-Pacific States, 13 seats; Eastern European States, 6 seats; Latin American and Caribbean States, 8 seats; and Western European and different States, 7 seats.
