Trump says India to pay huge tariffs if it continues to purchase Russian oil

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that India goes to pay “huge tariffs” if it continues to purchase oil from Russia, whereas reiterating that he bought assurance from Prime Minister Narendra Modi that New Delhi goes to halt its oil purchases from Moscow. 

Speaking to reporters onboard Air Force One on Sunday (October 19, 2025), Mr. Trump stated India will “proceed to pay huge tariffs” if they don’t stop shopping for oil from Russia, including that “they (India) do not wish to try this.”

Mr. Trump was replying to a query about India’s current remarks on oil purchases from Russia. 

India final week stated it’s “broad-basing and diversifying” its sourcing of vitality to satisfy market situations, hours after Mr. Trump claimed that Mr. Modi assured him that New Delhi will cease procuring Russian crude oil.

Mr. Trump stated he doesn’t consider India made such remarks. 

“But I do not consider they stated that. No, I spoke with Prime Minister Modi of India, and he stated he isn’t going to be doing the Russian oil factor,” the U.S. President added. 

Washington has been sustaining that India helps Putin to finance the battle by means of its buy of Russian crude oil.

The relations between New Delhi and Washington have been reeling below extreme stress after Mr. Trump doubled tariffs on Indian items to a whopping 50 per cent, together with a 25% extra obligation for India’s buy of Russian crude oil.

India described the US motion as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable”.
