U.S. plans 1:1 chip manufacturing rule to curb abroad reliance: Report

The U.S. is planning to ask chipmakers to fabricate at house as many semiconductors as their prospects import, aiming to curb reliance on abroad provide, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

The Trump administration would levy tariffs on corporations that don’t maintain a 1:1 ratio over time, the report mentioned, citing individuals conversant in the plan.

The plan stems from U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks final month that tech corporations manufacturing domestically may keep away from roughly 100% tariffs on semiconductors.

The transfer, tied to Trump’s efforts to revive U.S. manufacturing, has motivated worldwide corporations to speculate extra, sending billions into the nation.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick floated the concept with semiconductor executives, telling them it is perhaps obligatory for financial safety, the Journal mentioned.

“America cannot be reliant on foreign imports for the semiconductor products that are essential for our national and economic security,” the newspaper cited White House spokesperson Kush Desai as saying, including that any reporting about policymaking needs to be handled as speculative, except formally introduced.
