The Supreme Court is scheduled to listen to the bail pleas of activist Sharjeel Imam, former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) scholar Umar Khalid, and three others on Monday (September 22, 2025) within the bigger conspiracy case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots. 

A Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and Manmohan, on September 19, adjourned the listening to for the second time in a row and directed that the matter be taken up on September 22, with out assigning causes.

The petitions problem the September 2 verdict of the Delhi High Court denying bail to the accused. A Division Bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur had held that the accused performed “prima facie grave” roles within the conspiracy.

Besides Mr. Imam and Mr. Khalid, the High Court had denied bail to activists Gulfisha Fatima, Khalid Saifi, Athar Khan, Mohd. Saleem Khan, Shifa-ur-Rehman, Meeran Haider, and Shadab Ahmed, accepting the prosecution’s rivalry that the riots weren’t “an everyday protest” however a “premeditated, well-orchestrated conspiracy.” Separately, the bail plea of one other accused, Tasleem Ahmed, was rejected by a unique High Court Bench on September 2.

    Supreme Court to listen to bail pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and others

    The Supreme Court on Friday (September 19, 2025) adjourned for the second time in a row the listening to on the bail pleas of activist Sharjeel Imam, former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) scholar Umar Khalid, and three others within the bigger conspiracy case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots.

    A Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and Manmohan directed that the matter be taken up on September 22, with out assigning causes. “List on 22.09.2025,” the order stated.

    The adjournment comes every week after the Justice Kumar-led Bench had deferred the listening to on September 12, noting that the case information had reached the judges’ residences solely after midnight.
