The work on Valvetty Thangal Pond will be taken up at a cost of ₹17.78 crore, while Puthucheri Eri will be restored at a cost of ₹10.74 crore. According to the GCC, the eco-restoration and rejuvenation works proposed for both waterbodies provide for the excavation of the pond bed to a depth of 50 centimetres for cleaning purposes, with the formation of graded slopes from the embankment to the bed.
The civic body said slope protection would be carried out along the inner embankments of both waterbodies using vetiver grass, buffer grass, and Bermuda grass laid over a coir mat. A kerb wall will be provided along the top of the embankments.
Irrigation of the slopes at both sites will be carried out through 50 millimetre (mm) and 100 mm diameter pipes fitted with sprinklers placed at three-metre intervals. Water levels have been identified for the Northeast monsoon period in December and for March.
The GCC said handrails would be provided along the pond edges, along with ecological grid paving on adjoining walkways. A chain-link fence will be installed along the outer boundaries. It stated that sitting benches would be placed at intervals of 200 metres, while lamp posts and closed-circuit television cameras will be installed at intervals of 30 metres. Trees planted along the embankments will include Pongamia pinnata and Syzygium cumini.
