According to the police, around 11 p.m. on December 6, a group of wedding guests attacked a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus driver in Rohini Sector 20 following a dispute over the right of way on a congested, one-way road during a wedding procession at Shiv Chowk.
In his complaint, Vikas’s colleague Umesh, who was on duty as the bus conductor at the time, stated that the dispute began after a private vehicle refused to give way to the bus. The driver of the car hurled abuses at Vikas and then called his relatives. “They climbed from the driver’s side door and pulled him out; they kicked and punched him till his body lay motionless,” it states.
A senior officer said that a bystander, Suraj, who intervened to save the victim, was also attacked and suffered serious injuries.
“Vikas and Suraj were rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital. While Suraj’s treatment continued there, Vikas was referred to Safdarjung Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday,” said DCP (Rohini) Rajeev Ranjan.
Mr. Kumar said his son had completed his BA and wanted to pursue further education through distance learning. “I can’t understand how one can kill a fellow human being over something so petty,” he said. Vikas had been working as a driver for the past two years and was earlier employed with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, said his father.
Condemning the incident, the DTC Karmachari Ekta union blocked roads in the Capital and demanded strict punishment for the guilty and compensation for the victim’s family.
The police have so far arrested one person, Rahul, the main accused’s nephew. Search for the others is under way, said the officer.
