Coimbatore City Police have made elaborate arrangements to ease the rush in market places, bus stands and roads during Pongal festival days and to ensure safety of the public.

City Police Commissioner N. Kannan said on Monday that 1,000 police personnel have been deployed in different parts of the city to handle the crowd during Pongal holidays.

He urged the public to make use of special arrangements made at different bus stands in the city for transportation to various destinations for the Pongal festival.

Watchtowers have been erected in places such as Oppanakara Street and Big Bazaar Street, with special teams being deployed to prevent crimes. Special teams of police will be present in market places and other busy locations to prevent pocket-picking and other crimes.

Monitoring will be intensified in market areas on Wednesday and Thursday. Security has been heightened at 10 temples and security has been beefed up at six locations in the city.

Regarding the email bomb threats that are being received by various government offices and establishments in the city, the Commissioner stated that there was good progress in the investigation.

He added that the police submitted a supplementary charge-sheet with regard to the gang-rape of a college student in the city in November last year.
