The Greater Chennai City Police arrested a 25-year-old woman from Madhya Pradesh in Delhi, on charges of stealing gold jewellery from a woman in the Seven Wells area of Chennai.

According to the police, T. Ashok Kumar, 44, residing at Kovilpathagai in Avadi, Chennai, along with his family, including his mother Kelammal, had purchased about 69 grams of gold jewellery from ashop in the Seven Wells area on December 10. After the purchase, while the family was having food at an eatery located on Perumal Mudali Street, Sowcarpet, unidentified persons took advantage of the crowd, cut open the bag that Kelammal was carrying using a blade, and stole a box containing the 69 grams of gold jewellery.

Based on a complaint lodged by Ashok Kumar with the Seven Wells police station’s crime wing, the police registered a case and began an investigation. After examining the footage from CCTV cameras installed at the location, it was found that two women had followed Ashok Kumar’s family and stolen the box containing the gold jewellery from Kelammal.

Further investigation led to the identification of the auto-rickshaw driver who had transported the two women. During questioning, it was revealed that one of the women had borrowed the driver’s mobile phone to speak to her husband. On tracking the mobile number, the police found that the woman involved in the theft was in Delhi.

A special police team rushed to Delhi and, with the assistance of local police, arrested the accused Akshita Sisodia, 25, from Rajgarh district, Madhya Pradesh, in Delhi. During interrogation, Akshita confessed that she had committed the theft along with her mother-in-law and had escaped by train. She also revealed that the stolen gold jewellery had been hidden at her native house in Madhya Pradesh.

Following this, the police produced her before a Delhi court and obtained a transit warrant. The special team then went to the Boda area in Madhya Pradesh and, with the help of the local police, recovered the 69 grams of stolen gold jewellery and seized cash of ₹4,250. The accused was then brought to Chennai.

Further inquiry revealed that Akshita already has one previous theft case registered against her in Mumbai. Police teams are continuing their search to nab the other accused involved in the case.
