Explained: How is the Aravalli range to be protected?
The top court on November 20 had accepted a uniform definition of the Aravalli hills and ranges and banned grant of fresh mining leases inside its areas spanning Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat until experts’ reports are out.
The committee recommended that “Aravalli Hill” will be defined as any landform in designated Aravalli districts with an elevation of 100 metres or more above its local relief and an “Aravalli Range” will be a collection of two or more such hills within 500 metres of each other.

Supreme Court Special Bench to hear suo motu case on ‘definition’ of Aravalli
Amid concerns over the recent redefinition of the Aravalli Hills, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of the matter on Saturday (December 27, 2025) and decided to hear it on Monday (December 29, 2025).A three-judge Special Vacation Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant will hear the matter.
In a judgment in November, the Apex Court accepted the recommendations of a committee of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, defining the ‘Aravalli Hills’ as any landform with an elevation of 100 m or more above the local relief and an ‘Aravalli Range’ as a collection of two or more such hills within 500 m from each other.
